Studies on the F1 Crosses between Melon (var , reticulatus & var . cantaloupensis) and Oriental Melon (C. melo var . microspermus)

Abstract
The objective of this experiment was to obtain basic data for cantaloupe breeding that would improve cantaloupe cultivars (Cucumis melo var. cantaloupensis) for the adaptation to the natural conditions in Korea.
The results obtained from this experiment were as follows:
1. Heterosis from crosses between oriental melon (Cucumis melo var. microspermus) and muskmelon (C. melo var. reticulatus) appeared strongly in the second generation. Fruit skin cracking was negatively correlated with both sugar content and thickness of fruit flesh. It is thus recommended that cultivars with higher sugar content and thick fruit flesh be used for the further breeding effort.
2. Quality of the F©û crosses between muskmelon and cantaloupe was generally excellent, but the quality of the F©û crosses that contained the character of oriental melon was generally poor probably because of the lower sugar content and many cracking fruits.
3. From the studies on the crosses between 12 introduced cultivars since 1968. ¢¥British Queen line¢¥, ¢¥Delicious 51¢¥, ¢¥New melon line¢¥, and ¢¥Kang seo¢¥ were found to have excellent characters in the second generation and ¢¥HRM-7301¢¥ was selected as one of these crossing combinations.
